The Year Ahead for Falmouth Zen




While the Asian year of the Dragon is not yet upon us, the Gregorian calendar says it’s okay to wish for happiness now! 


Here at Falmouth Soto Zen Sangha, we have a full slate of activities and services lined-up for 2024:



  1. Morning Zen on Zoom will continue from 6:30-7:30 ET each day.

  2. Just Sit Saturdays will be the second Saturday of the Month at the First Congregational Church of Falmouth from 7:30-9:00, followed by coffee.

  3. The second Tuesday of each month I’ll be leading discussion of the STO Dharma Cloud book study: Standing At The Edge, by Roshi Joan Halifax (January-June).

  4. Mokuo Nancy Sherwood (FSZS: Practice Leader) will help facilitate the STO Women’s Forum and the FSZS Project on Women Ancestors (POWA)

  5. We’ll continue our monthly Sangha-to-Sangha speaker exchange with Jacksonville, Mission Mountain, Bellevue, and Chattanooga.

  6. Independent study,which we began in 2022, will continue this year as a member of the Sangha may create a learning contract to explore an area of Zen 1:1 with me which includes certificates of study. 

  7. We’ll stay engaged with teaching Zazen, at Emerson House, Falmouth Senior Center, The West Falmouth Library, and addition and at our zendo at the First Congregational Church of Falmouth.

  8. We are exploring Zazen being taught at two additional locations this year as well, as three Sangha members are engaged in these efforts.

  9. Beginning on January 3, 2024 there will be five teachings (one each month) on five basic tenets of  Buddhism:

  10. Three Laws

  11. Four Noble Truths

  12. Noble Eightfold Path

  13. Paramitas

  14. Precepts

  15. I’ll speak at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth (UUFF) on January 21,2024 and have been asked to speak on other Sundays throughout the year (TBA).

  16. We will have one member of our Sangha begin their Jukai journey this February.

  17. We’ll have an important FSZS Business Meeting on February 20, 2024, reviewing our financial and activities of 2023, and Looking at the implications of my stepping back from day-to-day activities staring in February, 2025. 

  18. Day long Zazenkai are planned for March, June, and September  along with a spring and fall Silent Thunder Order retreats in May and October and our Rohatsu twelve hour sit around the eight of December.

  19. We are considering moving to Zoom Only Tuesday night services for the months of June and July, 2024 and will discuss this at the business meeting February 20, 2024.

  20. Beach Zazen will begin Monday May 6, 2024 from 6:30-7:30 and continue each Monday through September, 2024.

  21. I’ll co-lead a Master Class with STO Abbot Taiun Elliston Roshi in November for Founder's Month.

  22. Beginning July 9, 2024 through December 10, STO Cloud Dharma Study will be: The Mountains and Waters Sutra: A Practitioner's Guide to Dogen's "Sansuikyo" by Shohaku Okumura Roshi.

  23. Dokusan will be offered by appointment throughout the year.
