Falmouth Soto Zen Sangha
MEMORIAL SERVICE
Junko Mary Lou Holland
1930 – 2020
Marylou Holland was a member of the Falmouth Soto Zen Sangha. She started attending the Sangha in 2016. A long-time Zen practitioner, she began her studies and practice in the 1970s with her first teacher Jakusho Kwong-roshi, founder and residing abbot of Sonoma Mountain Zen Center. An avid reader Marylou constantly studied the works of Shunryu Suzuki-roshi who was the teacher of Kwong-roshi.
A mainstay and senior student at the Falmouth Soto Zen Sangha, she took vows in the Silent Thunder Order in 2018, becoming the student of Unshin Sangaku Joslyn-sensei. Constantly supporting others, she was a source of laughter and a wealth of knowledge of Zen practice to all. She spoke often, and sometimes loudly, about her beliefs and was a bridge for newcomers to the Zen movement of the late 1960 and early 1970.
Junko, her Dharma name, means “pure-light.” She will be remembered for her heart-felt, pure-light of kindness.
